Title: Any mushrooms hunters out there??
Post by: fishfinder on September 15, 2015, 07:55:39 PM
There is an older gentleman on my route that I have befriended... He is an avid outdoorsman and he has peaked my interest on picking edible mushrooms. He gave some pointers on looking for popinkis and sheepshead. I'm sure the popinkis will be out soon with cooler overnight temps. Anyone have any tips on cleaning, cooking and storage?

I was out in the woodlot out back on saturday and found a big sheepshead, or at least it woulda been big. Something else found it first and it was pretty dug up. I'm hoping for a good rain to bring out the shrooms but it doesn't look like we'll be getting much for a while.

good shrooms zziipp! Be careful with the popinki's, they can give some folks a sour stomach. Eat a small amount first and maybe parboil first. They are also a good one to dry and use in recipes.

just as a double check, popinki's, or honey mushrooms, have gills and a white spore print. This is a good type of shroom to do a double check on ;)

They are papinkies for sure.
They will grow taller in the next 2 days and the cap will get thinner and flatten out.they eont be as firm and tasty in that state. There at the best state in the pic.
When they get bigger we start calling them Brownies.Still good.i like them in soup when they get bigger.
Where you found those, they should be more.
Good luck.any info on cooking them or cleaning them, give me a call.

My grandfather always told me to put a small onion in while boiling the shrooms...if the onion turns gray you've got a bad shroom in the batch.

Wow,never heard of that but,its worth a try for the guys new to shroom picking.Im hopeing to get out tomorrow sfter work.these cooler nites should bring them out too.
I think over the weekend they will lots springing up.Hunting saturday will be shot in the a**.With sll the rain,80%.still could pic shrooms and toss a few beers back at the camper.

hey, here's something I just read, they get the name popinki from a Polish phrase that translates to "near the stump" cuz they tend to grow on or near old hardwood stumps.

Like spider said...popinkis will have a white spore print, poisonous shrooms will have dark spore print wich will turn onion gray.
I agree with ya chez, any outdoor activities this time of the year is better than sitting in the house.

I was out shooting the bows with one of my grandsons yesterday and found a small patch of what I think are brick caps. They were still young so I'll keep my eyes on them.

yep, if I can't id them I won't eat them. I'm waiting for the heads to open up so I can look at the gills. If they are sort of purple then they are probably brick caps. Good shrooms. They grow at the base of hardwood stumps like papinkies. The thing is, the stems are kinda fat. I'll wait and see, should be able to tell this afternoon.

looks like some kind of an oyster mushroom. Did it fall off a tree?

I did a spore print on the little ones I found and it came up a brown color. Everything points to brick caps. Supposed to be a good one but the Mrs doesn't trust me ::)

Gave it a nudge with my foot and it was definitely adhered to the ground

weve been finding them where the oaks and gullys and ravines are. esp if theres some moisture and moss bedding. believe me though these spots arent an easy stroll on flat land.the one spot we only find em on the one side of the hill. we walked the other side and couldnt find one.the west side had em and the east side nadda. same kind of area with the oaks and rocks and moss on the outter side of the gully but nadda one on the other side.maybe less sun on the west side and retains a lil more moisture. i dont know.
Title: Re: Any mushrooms hunters out there??
Post by: Spider1 on October 10, 2015, 07:35:48 AM
you pretty much got it. The west side gets later sun so it holds on to the moisture from the night and morning longer.
