you beat me to this topic susky! Lol! Pickerel meat is sweeter than pike. VERY tasty. We grind the meat and small bones really fine. Make fish cakes and fry!  Takes alot of patience to clean them to completely remove all the bones. Some good pickeral cleaning videos on YouTube!  Give them a shot....you'll like it!

3 years ago there was a discussion while ice fishing about pickerel being so good to eat so I decided that I was gonna eat the next legal pickerel that I caught... haven't caught a legal one since! I went and jinxed myself. I'm working to break that jinx cuz I hear they are real good eating if you can work around the -y- bones.

I read somewhere awhile back that like walleyes, pickerel are eating machines, they have a high metabolism.  Which is partly why they taste so good.

The pickled pickerel sound intriguing...what do you use to make the "pickling brine" ?

lol! yep sure would like to but a trip like that ain't in the cards for me. Plenty of places to catch pickerel a bit closer to home, just gotta get the chance to get out after them. ot and home ownership keeps me grounded.  ::)
