Small fish story
« on: July 04, 2015, 12:58:59 PM »
I often fish small ponds in my area for pan fish.
Friday afternoon my wife and I went on a mission to stock-up on bluegill filets for an upcoming fish fry.
I rigged the poles with small jigs; small bobbers set at 2 foot, and then attached about 1 inch or less of worm.
The action was fast and we landed 30 or more gills in an hour, most were between 6 and 11 inches.
The bluegills were fun to catch and will be a hit at the fish fry, the fileting was not as much fun.

Thanks for sharing your tale. Were the gills hitting the jig bare or were your tipping it with some bait?

I used just enough worm meat to cover the barb; the flash of the jig seems to make them hit it upon landing.

As a post script to my little story:

My wife and I tried to match the catch on Sunday evening.
It was the same amount of time, same pond, bait, same everything except the
fish did not seem to care.
We were skunked.
Sometime fishin’ does not mean catchen’

I tried your ice fishing jig with a tiny bit of red worm on the gills at Frances Slocum today and it worked like a charm. Many more hits and hook ups than before. Plus I caught 3 crappies and two golden shiners. thanks for the tip.

I'm glad that you gave it a try and it worked. Most are only lip hooked and yes crappy like it. Sometimes it will wake up a slow day and help fill your bucket.
