almost got skunked at Promised Land
« on: October 07, 2015, 07:50:29 AM »
I played hooky yesterday. Told the boss the fish were biting and need the day off but I guess I was wrong. The fishing was slow to say the least. I woke up early and hit the upper lake at Ridgefield, it looked promising.

I had a few gills harass my lures but that was all and I had no hook ups.

I loaded up and went home for lunch. Took the Mrs shopping and mowed the lawn. then It was back to the lake. Hit the lower lake next and had a nice size black bear  run out in front of me on the lake road. I took it as a good omen.

Didn't work out that way. It was a nice day, a bit breezy at times but it was better than sitting at this desk. I watched a pair of eagles chasing each other around above the lake, constant splashing of kingfishers diving for minnows and a beaver was swimming and eating lily pads while I fished the same area but still no hookups.

Just at sundown I started hearing popping noises and tossed out a popper and was working it back to the canoe when it got hit. A nice pickerel, 18" and in the cooler. I got the lure back out and after a couple casts got another hard hit. This one had some shoulders and I was sure it was a nice bass, right up until I got it to the canoe.

I put that bad boy in with the pickerel and cast back out. Another 15 minutes later and I realized it was over already. Gills were still popping on top but nothing else was hitting. I worked the lake for another hour and called it a day.

It was a great day to be outside and I didn't get skunked. it was worth the vacation day  8)

Nice Calico brother.
Plus an other,snake for dinner.
Sounds like you had a good time.
Nothing like being fishing in a boat or canoe in the fall with the leaves changing.
Good for you.you been putting a bit of fish in that livewell lately bro. :)

yeah, buddy. It was great not being at work, LOL! When I got that slab to the canoe I tried horsing him in... didn't work! I didn't weigh him but he has some meat on him! I hope we can get into some that size this winter ;)  Speaking of which, why is easier to fish this lake on ice than in a boat???

Nice slab  ;)  I used to do well in the open water on Lower Lake, with gills.  I had caught decent crappies but only 1 or 2, can't seem to find them through the ice.

You've inspired me, I need a day out.

I skipped work and went to Hunters yesterday also. PFC trout stocking schedule said 10/2 2015 but didn't see any caught and there was a lot of people fishing for a week day. Oh well, it was a nice day to get skunked!!

HD, I did good on trout one year and ok on crappie and perch the year after. I was out one day when everyone was catching big bass and pickerel all day and nothing else! It's a strange lake for being so small. I was just amazed that the bite was so short. The crappie was fat and happy but the pickerel was skinny. Looked like he hadn't had a meal in days.

Shiver, it was a great day to be out for sure. But then any day is a good day to play hooky,  ;)

not really. You can bust through brush and find some spots to get to edges but the edges seem to be shallow with lots of stumps. I've tried it and given up fishing from the shore here. I've seen some guys in chest waders walking around on the lower lake. It's good in a kayak or small boat. I have a 15' canoe set up as a one man fishing boat. It's a fun set of lakes to ice fish on though.

Kayaks are great.
They are fun, especially on small lakes and ponds. Fish don't even know your there . Unfortunately I didn't get much use out of mine this year. I had to buy a new launch permit this year (wich was a waste)...good thing they are good for two years
