DELAWARE RIVER SHAD
« on: April 12, 2016, 06:35:20 PM »
It's that time year again.  I'm hoping to go for the first trip of the year this week.  If not I will be going Saturday and Sunday while everyone else is chasing trout.

I hope so to.    I'm not sure what to expect this year.  I can't remember when the first of back to back floods that happened after the shad spawned.

Thanks for the info WIZZY :)
Zane GRAY is a great area to fish.
Last time I was out for shad, had to be 15 years or better.
I was at,NARROWSBURG,Shad were thick,,
we were getting into a few, having fun, when out of no where, this ASIAN GUY shows up.
GETS 5 yds from me and starts throwing,,Well ,I didn't mind too much >:(!!!!!!!!,There were enough Shad for everyone. >:(
Then he hooked in to a nice fish,,turned out to be a 22" brown..Now I was a bit JEALOUSE.
I moved down river a few yards and put my back to this guy,and went on with my fishing.
then I heard this ASIAN guy,JABBERING real LOUD again in this ASIAN JABBER,,I turned to look ,he had another trout, close to the last one he caught.both were onn Shad darts.
I packed up my gear, crossed the bridge ,got some bait and headed to HANDCOCK to catch trout.
That was the end of my SHAD FISHING..LOL.
I would luv to try it again..I bet those shad make great CATFISH BAIT.
GOOD LUCK WIZZY..
WATCH,FOR THOSE ASIAN FELLOWS,,THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING ;)
HE CLEARED ME OUT OF THAT HOLE QUICK..LOL :)

Chez shad make excellent cut bait for cats.  Shad used to be my secret bait back in my west branch of the sulky catfish days.  They couldn't resist

nice! Did you toss em back or keep them for bait. I heard they are good eating if you can get past the bones. Maybe a good candidate for pickling.

Shad is a traditional meal here, the CT River shad run is commercially netted in a stretch of river about 50 miles long. It takes a skilled hand to filet them without bones, but when cooked properly they have a distinct flavor. Around here there are a number of "shad bake" fundraisers put on by fire departments, most of them cook on an oak plank over an open flame. My family usually has one or at most two meals of them every spring.

Fished tonight four a couple of hours and had a great night.  Landed 15 lost 5.   2/3 caught on candy corn colored darts and the rest on spoons.   Stopped counting after 60 shad swam by.

That's a nice evening of shad fishing Wizzy.  Your post reminded me of what I had mentioned previously about shad in CT. The run is on around here too.
