Blackfish season begins
« on: October 11, 2016, 10:59:00 AM »
The blackfish (Tautog) season started here yesterday but there was a big blow so we held off till this morning. It was a bloodbath, two of us caught about 50 fish up to 8 lbs. The limit is only four each, the eight in the picture weighed almost 40 lbs.

They are awesome fighters, they head straight for bottom and any rock or snag in the area. The interesting thing is that we chum for them with cut up crabs, in only 3-5 feet of water this time of year. You drop the bait to the bottom and they're on it faster than bluegills on a worm. Even the big ones just give little tugs while they crush the crab, you have to be quick as they are expert bait thieves.

Yes, they are good chez, but not as good as the Black Sea Bass IMO. They call them "poor mans lobster", but I think it's because the meat is similar in texture to lobster, not taste. My wife bakes and breads them, I enjoy a few meals. Mostly they're fun to catch. They are a member of the wrasse family, slimy as heck. And they stay alive all day in a cooler if you keep them out of the sun. Very easy to keep fresh that way.

Not sure about the sea bass Larry, I haven't had a chance to check. This mornings trip had us at the office by 8:30, I have to keep the employees in line.  ::)

I used to fish for them in Jersey before there was any size or creel limit. It was frustrating learning to hook them at first. I was fishing off the ends of beach jettys. You had an instant to pull the trigger or they were gone, then once you did get one hooked it was high rod and reel like hell to keep them from diving into the rock piles. Tons of fun and one of the best eating ocean fish IMO. I found better places to fish for them as time went on. Now with the regs I don't think I would bother shore fishing them.
FM

Here is probably the best blackfish/tog I ever caught shore fishing and, at no extra charge, two of my best blues 36" each. I was just telling Chez about the blues recently. They came of Seaside Heights beach. The blackie outta the Shark River Inlet.

The Mrs. and I spent a five-gallon pail of green crabs on blackfish yesterday. I find that chumming gets them going, I cut up about two dozen crabs when we anchor and toss them upcurrent, the fish show up in numbers pretty quick. As you say FM, they can be really tough to hook, when you feel the rap you need to strike quick. We caught a mess, but no big ones boated. A total of six rigs lost, the larger ones always have a lair they head for and the line gets cut. Lots of swearing, the rigs cost around $3 each.

We tried the sea bass, they've moved to the really deep water (150+), we were having trouble holding bottom with 12 oz. sinkers.

Nice photos FM, I remember those days. Before all the regs we could sell all the sh*theads (bluefish) we could catch for $0.20-.25 a pound. On a banner day we would fill the 16' aluminum to the bottom of the seats which was roughly 1,000 lbs. A $250 score was big bucks for teenagers in the '70's. Oh yeah, and I had big hair too.  ;D
