Title: Float Trip on the Susky
Post by: RutNut on April 25, 2015, 06:58:07 AM
In one of the other threads(can't find it now), Chez suggested a PAFishers Camping trip. It morphed into an overnight float trip on the Susky camping on one of the islands.

I told Chez I would post a thread, so WHO's IN?

I'll leave the details to HD and CHez and you guys that have more experience on the Susky.

We'll need to pick a date and also figure out where to put in, where to take out and where to camp.

We should also probably pair up so those guys that don't have a canoe/Kayak can pair up with someone that does. I have a canoe and an open seat.

I have this suggestion for a route and it is simple and tested. Tunkhannock to Falls. There is an awesome campsite on one of the islands just below Whites Ferry I will post some pics later. Better start picking a date so I can figure out how to get free to go with youse.

That's a great spot I'm in for an over nighter right there.  Did anyone mention any definite dates yet ?   I normally don't even fish the river until July.   I can envision some night time topwater action just off the upstream edge of that island  :D

I'd also be interested in doing one further up river.

Thanks for posting the pics, FM. That looks like a good spot. Yeah, good idea to cross-promote with the other site. I'll leave it to someone else, as I don't get on that site.

HD- I was thinking sometime in July would probably be good as far as dates go. Looking at the calendar, the 4th is a Sat- probably not a good weekend to do it as most will have family plans. That leaves the 11th, 18th or 25th. Thinking maybe the 18th would be good as it is 2 weeks after the holiday weekend?

LOL!  ;D  No, I did a couple 4 day "off the grid" trips the last month or so. Was busy gettin' ready for them and biking. The second one was a 4 day bike-packing trip in WV, so I had to do a lot of riding to get in shape!  ;)

Looking forward to doing a float trip now!

Rut you should watch river levels, it's pretty high now, dry weather supposedly coming in the next few days though.

I'd like to be involved in an August float if levels come down a bit.
Title: Re: Float Trip on the Susky

Yeah, didn't really think about water level. Maybe we should try to reschedule. It just would have worked out perfect for me for the 18th(july).  ::)

But if more could make it in August, that would be better. Start throwing out some dates. I know I have plans for the first weekend Aug 1 and 2. And possibly Aug 15/16.

HD if you guys want to do it Sat. into Sunday go ahead and do it. I'll try to hook up with you in the fall. Or like I said, if you wanna just do a day trip I could do Sat.

Just let me know what you want to do. Maybe a Sat. Sun trip will generate more interest?

Chez, we're going to launch out of Whites Ferry and camp on an island only a couple miles down river.  We won't be launching til after 3pm then find a spot to camp and fish the white fly hatch.

We're gonna fish all day Saturday from the island down to Falls bridge where we're gonna take out.  If you see a yellow pontoon and a small rowboat that's us.  Short float but more time to fish.

Hey guys  ;D  I have quite a few pics to go through, fished the white fly hatch again last night and slept in today.  It was a good time and I got to see parts of the river I'd never seen before.  We floated through a complete variety of water, saw eagles, hit a couple hatches, cooked hawdawgs over a campfire and caught fish, good times.

Here's 1 pic for the time being, more to come

LOL! Good ZING you got in there, Kid!  ;D  Yeah, no bar for that crew(that day). My wife and kids were getting back in to town from a multi-day swim meet in Philly, so I had to get back shortly after dinner time.  I think Chez said he had to pack for the shore and Durk had some laundry to do!  ;)  Oh, and HD was headed back out on the river in the evening to hit the white fly hatch again, so he didn't want to be too tipsy!  ;D

We talked about doing a (1)day float trip maybe in Sept. Possibly Tunkannock to Whites Ferry? Already mentioned it to Slammer/It's Ice and he said he is interested. If we do it, we'll put you on the lunch(Dino's) committee!  ;)

Finally got the pics uploaded, sorry for the delay.

Thank you RutNut for making the trip down.  Special thank you to Chez & Durk for showing up with the jokes and the beverages.

My ride
(http://i.imgur.com/ChEXfcD.jpg)

It handled fairly well with a load of gear, not much for speed, but I could see everything below.

Our camp

RutNuts tent
(http://i.imgur.com/oroXio2.jpg)

My solo "tent''

My sleep pad worked well, I never really slept on rocks before.  There wasn't much else on the island except for one party spot that was a sharp climb up and half way around the other side of the island.  Some previous campers had cut down a bunch of weeds and made a mat which I pitched the tent on.

RutNut fishing during the beginning of the white fly hatch
(http://i.imgur.com/4ryJ4Ri.jpg)

I got 2 smallies during that hatch, 1 was good sized.  RutNut was cooking dawgs on the campfire so I gave the bass a break.  Loads of nice bass were rising, I hooked and lost 4 before I finally got one to hand.

River shots
(http://i.imgur.com/N167YWq.jpg)

I saw several large carp moving up through this channel.  They were just below the surface, they refused my fly.  I also saw a huge channel cat move out from the weeds.

I'd be up for another float but I think further upriver.   I'd really like to float in the area of Black Walnut and Laceyville.  It would be a good idea to do some recon so we could find the best camping spots.  I would do this one again though.

Wow ,wow, wow, what do you geezers think your doing ? Two float trips in this short amount of time? This is preposterous?  Are you trying to get yourselves  in shape for ice fishing or something ? Let's be realistic  and just relax on a nice lake maybe some food and beverages and plan for next year. I don't think you guys have it in you ! hahaha. Prove me wrong and let's do it!

Old Geezers???????
Who you talking about???just because were a little gray dont count us out.We might be getting mid age the the furnace is still burning.

Hey, nice pics HD! It brings back memories............... .........seems like it was just yesterday!  ;)

Was a great trip, even if it was only an over-nighter!  You forgot to mention the McGyver rig for the hotdog "skewers"!  ::)

And the dude in the fancy powerboat that we thought was gonna run over us..................... ...until he got stuck on the rock!  ;D

LMBO Kid!  ;D   I'll give ya a hint................... ....................... I've already done the following this Spring/Summer: a 2 day backpacking trip up Hammersley Fork, an overnight bike-packing trip on the Pine creek railtrail(back to back), a 4 day (134 mile) bike-packing trip on the Greenbriar River Trail in WV, an 18 mile mtn bike ride from Jim Thorpe to Summit Hill (and back) and several multi-day camping trips. I think I'm ready for another float trip!  ;)

I guess we'll just have to have a PA outdoorsman marathon to prove our* unique * skills to each other then the next time we go out on an adventure haha.

I forgot to add a few things,  yes there were a couple "hot shots" on the water, power boats looking for trouble.  Besides the one RutNut mentioned, I saw a guy with an outboard on the other side of our island.  His anchor rope was stuck directly up river.  He was actually out of the boat for awhile trying to free the anchor.  I tried wading across to help but no go.  I think he finally cut the anchor rope.  I could only imagine what might've happened if he did free the anchor and then lost control of the boat, it could've been a mess, lots of rocks and fast water where he was.

RutNut MacGyver'd  a weenie roasting stick from a tent spike and a branch, worked great til I got a hold of it.  I don't care what kind of weenies you got they all taste good over a campfire.

He also has an awesome water purifying system, that Sawyer water filter is definitely my next purchase.  He loaded ice into his big mouthed hydration pack, after it melted he had ice cold water to drink.  Those mini drink mix packets looked good too.

RutNut is a minimalist like me and it was a good experience trading ideas and checking out gear.   Although he did bring a bag of chips  ::)  lol

I had a small collapsible style cooler that fit right in one of my side pouches on the pontoon.  I stuck a small plastic bottle of frozen water in it, it kept stuff cool well into day 2.

I had a small ground tarp under my tent and a small Thermarest pad to sleep on.  It wasn't uncomfortable lying flat on my back, but every time I moved or rolled over I woke up, which happened a lot.  For comfort out there a hammock would be the way to go if you could find 2 trees to swing it from.

LOL! No need for any competition Kid! I was just sayin'....................don't judge a book by it's cover!  ;)  Most of us old guys got nothin' to prove anymore................ ..............those days are long gone!  ;D

HD- yeah, I figured we had a lot in common from reading your posts. Yep- I like gear that you can use for multiple functions. I try not to take stuff that only has a single use. Like using a camelback type water bladder in a pack for drinking when hiking, then hang it in camp as a storage bladder for cooking and cleaning- just pull the bite valve out of the hose- even use it for a backcountry shower on multi day trips. Just add a cup of heated water from the camp stove and top off the cold(er) water in the bladder then hang higher in a tree. Lather up and rinse off with the bladder hose with nice warm water.  8)

The rocky ground wasn;t a problem for me. I have a good inflatable full length air matress, so the only time I felt the rocks was when my arm or leg would slip off the mat- but that only happened once or twice. Best advice I ever got was to invest in a good air matress for backpacking or bike-packing. Last thing you want to do after a long day of hiking or biking is be kept up half the night because you are uncomfortable and can't sleep!  :o

BTW, LOL! on the chips.................. ..........I have a weakness for good kettle cooked ones!  ;D

OK guys- let's throw out some dates in Sept. I'm gonna be away the 2nd and 4th weekend of Sept. Can you guys do the 3rd weekend?

And are we doing a day float trip or another over-nighter?
